Mary Ellen is an exceptional person 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She will assist anyone in need in any circumstance. Her passion is nutrition and feeding the poor. On her own time she partnered with the Cooperative Feeding Bank of Ft. Lauderdale. It is here that she teaches nutrition classes on her own time. What is amazing about all of this she has devised box gardens so the poor can grow vegetables and feed themselves. Mary Ellen started to build the gardens solo and paid for the supplies herself until there were too many people wanting gardens. She then applied for a grant to help pay for the supplies. The gardens became so popular, there are now hundreds of gardens all over Ft. Lauderdale at schools, children centers, and anywhere else there is a need for nutritious food. On any Saturday or week day afternoon finds her building gardens.
Mary Ellen has also been instrumental in Haiti. She has used her vacation time to go on two missions this past year. In that time she has started to build a clinic in a rural area and has begun teaching a few people how to begin treatment for ailments in this clinic. She also has been part of a team that built a school in the same village.
I admire this nurse who gives and cares for people without any expectation of reward and recognition. She is a truly a nurse who shows her caring of fellow human beings.
