Rosanne Cortese, LPN has been at Rochester General Hospital for 15 years. She is in a truly unique situation as the only LPN in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Rosanne provides care with exceptional skill and compassion. Rosanne recognizes the need for constant collaboration with the RN staff and interdisciplinary team.
Her exemplary performance was exhibited when a patient with Traumatic Brain Injury was admitted to the unit. Ever vigilant, Rosanne observed the patient’s pupils and noted a minute change in size. Immediately, Rosanne notified her partnering RN. As a result of this finding, the patient was transported to CT Scan and then urgently taken to the Operating Room to relieve a life threatening swelling. She literally saved this patient’s life. Another example of excellence in practice includes the care of a patient that experienced a sudden and seemingly unexplained period of bradycardia. Rosanne responded immediately and while the rest of us assessed the patient pursuing the cause of the event, Rosanne calmly looked at the patient’s tracheostomy tube to find the dressing had occluded his airway, thus causing a momentary drop in his oxygenation and subsequent bradycardia. She calmly said, “Oh, there you go.... this should fix it” as she removed the dressing. And, it did “fix it”. Her ability to problem solve in a rapid, organized manner has greatly influenced positive patient outcomes. She is instrumental in educating the RN staff in the scope and the limitations that apply to her practice. She is instrumental in educating the RN staff in the highest standard of care while precepting LPN students assigned to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for their critical care rotation.
She imparts knowledge that has come from years of experience and her love of her career. Thank you for considering our exceptional nominee.
